I love to write.

Stories, letters, thoughts, dreams, poems. It doesn’t matter to me if no one ever reads what I write. The simple act of putting words into a notebook fills me with a strange kind of calm.

But most of all, I love writing poems.

I started writing poems when I was thirteen years old. And something unexpected happened.

Poetry took me from being a shy, almost invisible girl to someone people suddenly noticed. For the first time my teachers paid attention to me. For the first time people wanted to be my friend. For the first time, I was popular.

But that is not why I love poetry.

I love poetry because it allows me to say things that ordinary conversation never can.

Poems help me reach within myself and bring out feelings and thoughts that I would never have dared to say aloud. Somehow poetry creates a space where emotions can exist freely.

And there is something else about poetry that I find magical.

Poetry has the ability to take every emotion — love, fear, heartbreak — and transform it into something beautiful. Sometimes dark. Sometimes light. But always beautiful.

Poetry also allows the impossible to exist.

Silence can scream.
Nothingness can be felt.
A single word can hold an entire world.

Poetry is a place where words can be played with, explored, stretched and shaped. And in the process of discovering words, we often discover ourselves.

That is why I write poems.
