Gateway To Mental Well Being

July 2020 will be memorable to me because I spent an hour every Saturday and Sunday doing a course called Gateway to Mental Wellbeing. This was a course conducted by Gauri Hirwe Nilakantan.

Who is Gauri?

Gauri has a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. She works at building mental wellbeing among all age groups of society. She has touched almost 5000 families through group and personal counselling in her professional career over 15 years.

She is attached to schools, corporates and two hospitals in Thane.

Her forte is providing support to develop effective strategies for dealing with specific concerns and offering life skill coaching for the adult population

What the course entailed

I benefited a lot from the course because it covered topics that I was interested in. We spoke of awareness of mental health, identifying the early signs of illness and when intervention is required among other things.

One thing that Gauri said made a lot of sense to me. She compared going to a counsellor to a mental spa. If we can go for a physical check up once a year, or to the parlour every month, why don’t we see a counsellor for coping mechanisms to deal with stress and other problems that bring us down?

Her sessions were very interactive and in these eight hours we learnt so much! The  reason Gauri started the course is to help develop at least one member per family who understands mental health issues. Through these sessions the member would be equipped to take care of himself/herself and also the emotional needs of the family.

I must say that I feel that she has definitely succeeded in her goal with this batch. We definitely came away much wiser and richer in knowledge along with tips to help ourselves and our family deal with various issues.

This is definitely a course I would recommend for everyone.

The next course is starting in August and for more details you can contact Gauri at gaurinilakantan@gmail.com. Believe me at ₹3000/- it is a steal!

  1. Mental health is to be spoken and discussed. Yesterday I read an article which said 43% of Indians are in depression. It’s not a subject of denail. It needs to be faced, accepted and managed. People do come out of depression if handled well.
Thank you for your insight Sunita and thanks yo Gauri for her valuable contribution towards uplifting people.

  2. Your experience will certainly enrich many and help them seek mental help for mental health without any inhibitions and preconceptions or rather misconceptions.
Thanks to Gauri Hirwe Nilakantan and You Sunita.
