NaPoWriMo Day 4 – Muffin and the war of words

Muffin and the war of words

She watches me quietly,

Her head cocked to one side.

She is just waiting for me,

To take out my netbook  and write.

And then she will pounce,

On the keys joyfully,

And  delete everything

That  I wrote so painstakingly

She gives a playful yip,

And jumps on my lap,

And types jbvyw,eiss&ai

In just a single tap.

In this war with my writing ,

Muffin will always win

So I might as well stop

And gracefully give in.

Maybe tomorrow

I’ll get that chapter done

But for now I think

I’ll play with this little one.

NaPoWriMo Day3 – My student

Every teacher has one of these. That rebel of a student who she always scolds but who always brings a smile to her heart.

My student

He exasperates me,

Makes me tear my hair out.

It’s all I can do to keep calm

And not yell or shout.

The other students complain,

That he won’t let them write.

The  smallest excuse is enough

For him to get into a fight.

He never can sit still,

Without question he won’t obey.

But the class is so boring

When he isn’t there any day.

He’ll push me to my limits

Make me give more than my best

His super intelligent brains

Sure put mine to the test.

And just when I despair,

He gives an impish grin,

And such awesome work,

That my heart just caves in.

Yes, he can drive me crazy

Though he’s only nine

But he reminds me why I love teaching

This irritating student of mine.

NaPoWriMo Day 2 – Don’t tie me down!

Don’t tie me down!

Don’t tie me down!

Don’t chain my soul!

Let me fly high,

So that I can bring back

Some of the fragrance of the sky to you.

Leave me free to live,

To love you better.

Let me go and reach out for the stars.

Or else I’ll just fall to pieces,

Like a speck of dust with no life.

This picture  by Steve Yi, spoke to me of freedom, unfettered by any expectations. The freedom to be myself, to grow , to learn.

Unfortunately most relationships do not allow that kind of freedom. We always want to chain the person we love; hold them close to us and inevitably we end up losing them.

National Poetry Writing Month

I just realised that though I have been writing poems for ages, decades in fact, there is so much I don’t know about the world of poets and poetry. Today, I got a post on Facebook informing me that April is National Poetry Writing Month. And I said, “Wow! Can I do it? Write a poem everyday for a month?”

Well I don’t know if I can, but it sounds like fun and if I did it, it would be really great! So here goes, my first poem for the month, for ‪#‎NaPoWriMo‬

poetry #1 final
