There was a time not long ago, when Republic Day and Independence Day brought such joy to my heart. I heard the oft repeated songs, “Ay Mere Pyare Watan” “Ay Mere Watan ke Logo” and of course the National Anthem and they made my hair stand in awe and pride and adoration.
Today, I hear the same songs, but now my heart cries, because our country, MY country, is bleeding. My country is tied up in chains; in chains of despotic power .
Our Constitution weeps tears of blood as arrows of communalism, corruption and vested interests pierce it. As its voice is silenced by the poison that is propaganda. As its principles of equality and freedom are dimmed by the smog of selfish megalomaniac pursuits.
Can we save our Constitution? Can we save our Country? Can we give her back the dignity and respect she deserves?
Or will we let the desecration of our Mother go on?
Can any of us? It seems to me that many nations are losing their tenuous grip on democracy and idealism. The game of “Divide and Conquer” is afoot; people otherwise willing and able to DO anything about it are disheartened and exhausted by those who won’t.
