She stands in the garden quietly breathing in the fresh air. There is no one around at this time of the morning. The sun is just beginning to rise, casting a gentle glow in the eastern sky. A soft breeze rustles the leaves as if whispering good morning to the world.

The birds start chirping. Little ones hungry in their nests, clamouring for food. As she watches, a baby bird falls from the nest. Alarmed she rushes to pick it up to see if it is hurt. Immediately the parent birds come and attack her, chattering and chirping angrily. She puts the fledgeling back on the ground and watches as the parents hover around the little one and force it to use its wings.

Soon she sees the little one opening its wings and flapping about. She walks away, realising that it is safe and learning important lessons in life . Nature does not need humans interfering and creating a mess.

This flash fiction is written in response to the forty third edition of Fiction Monday hosted on Reflections by Vinitha Dileep.  I chose the picture prompt . If you like it, do say so in the comments. I would love to hear from you.

  1. Thats a heartwarming story Sunita, and a important message too. To stop interfering with nature. Aren’t we already paying a heavy price for years of abusing nature?

  2. That’s a beautiful story, Sunita. Nature doesn’t need us interfering with its way of working. But we do that time and again and leave behind such a mess.
Thank you so much for sharing this lovely story.
