I sit at the window, watching nature as she mourns. The sky is overcast, yet it is not raining. It is as if the sky is sad beyond tears. Nature reflects my mood; heavy and depressed.
Is there any ray of hope? Is there any place or time in the future where we can be safe? We can’t depend on men to do this as they can’t even begin to imagine what it is like to be violated, to be killed just because you are a woman and the perpetrators CAN.
They give advice like “women should carry condoms and cooperate with the rapist!” REALLY!
And the Chief Minister, being a woman, says,”Rape occurs because men and women are interacting more with each other now a days!”
She too is interacting with men, day in and day out. Is it okay if she gets raped? I will be asked how dare I even ask that question. But no one asks how dare they reduce the crime to explanations. There is no explanation! There is no rationalisation!
THIS IS RAPE! THIS IS MURDER! IT IS HEINOUS! IT IS EVIL! It deserves the harshest punishment that can be meted out and even that isn’t enough!

The least they could do is do away with the lame arguments and reasonings. Your anger and frustration is beyond valid. This anger and frustration had seen breaking points a million time before with no respite. What can we say that hasn’t been already said? But definitely we can do better. Clearly we haven’t taken a single step to ensure safety and security of women.
Couldn’t agree more with you, Sunita! It is vile, vicious and absolutely unacceptable to see how women are treated. It is a sick society, rotting from inside, and the stench filling every fibre of our beings with fear, insecurity and disgust. What kind of a world are we bringing our children into…and what are we teaching them to be…?
Our political system and especially the judiciary seems like a farce! I feel so angry and helpless. This horrific incident has taken a tremendous toll on so many of us…and despite all the rhetoric one gets to hear, I seriously have my doubts if the culprits will ever be brought to book or if justice will eventually prevail! I think as you grow older cynicism grips you even more.
I fervently hope that I’m proven wrong though!!!
I really have no words, Sunita. As I told you, I feel so helpless. The vitriol I see being spewed by men about women who are speaking out is absolutely beyond imagination. What does it say about us as a people?
So true .. they have to have severe punishment.. so no one dares to rape again.
Tears in my eyes, my heart bleeds at the very thought of these heinous crimes.
Powerful and painfully true. It’s infuriating how society makes excuses for such heinous crimes instead of focusing on justice. Your words are a much-needed voice against the victim-blaming and empty rationalisations we keep hearing!
