On the 15th of August when the country was celebrating moving forward into the 75th year of Independence, the Supreme Court took a huge plunge backwards.
The news that spread like wildfire all around the country and evoked horror and jubilation alike was the release of the 11 men condemned of rape and murder in the Bilkis Bano case.
The news sickened me so much, I had to literally breathe deeply to calm myself down. To add insult to injury, they were also hailed “Sanskari.”
This is not just a slap in the face for Bilkis Bano and all women, and but also for Hinduism. How can this be sanskari? This degrades India and Hinduism and humanity! We need to stand up against this vociferously.
Even as I type this, I can hear my family and friends say, “Be careful, Sunita. Be careful about what you write, it’s not safe!”
Is this kind of judgement safe? Is it safe for Bilkis Bano? Is it safe for women? Is it safe for true Hinduism? Is it safe for humanity?
One can only wonder at the perverted minds that ordered this and used a 1992 circular which claimed that prisoners who had served 14 years could be released on remission. They claim it was perfectly within the law! How very convenient !
And then they are applauded with aartis and garlands. How can your blood not boil? How can we not question this and fight this? We are truly in the Kalyug where monsters rule. I truly hope the saviour appears soon.
But till then, we have to be the ones fighting on, trying our best to preserve truth and justice in a world gone mad.
The rise of fascism and the war on women converge, don’t they? Worse, it’s happening globally. There is no virtue in silence on this, though there is probably good reason to be cautious. In the end, silence only aids the oppressor, and it’s not the kind of world I want to live in.
True. Keeping quiet does not work. It only adds to the crime.
