When governments and big corporations seem determined to destroy the environment, how do we teach our children to care for the Earth and all that she gives us?

I count myself lucky to work with young minds. In my creative writing sessions, I plant tiny seeds of awareness—seeds that, I hope, will grow into deep-rooted responsibility.

One of my favorite ways to begin is with the wisdom of a master storyteller: Dr. Seuss.

In The Lorax, the greedy Once-ler chops down the last Truffula tree, driving away the birds, the animals, and finally, the Lorax himself—the guardian of the forest. Before disappearing, the Lorax leaves behind one final word:

“Unless.”

For years, the Once-ler puzzles over what it means… until a child comes to hear his story. Then he understands:

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

That’s the moment I turn to my students and ask:
What do you care about? What can YOU do to make a difference?

Their answers—simple, honest, and full of heart—remind me that there is still hope.

🌱 Today, I ask you the same question:
What small thing will you do to help the Earth?
Leave a comment. Let’s grow a forest of hope together. 🌍💚

  1. Ah! I loved this. It can apply to so many things. I came across a line from one of Mary Oliver’s poem that went ‘how to love the world?’ and it prompted me to write a short piece. Looking after the environment is a very real way of loving the world!

  2. What a beautiful and powerful message you’re sharing with your students, Sunita. You’re not only teaching them to care about what truly matters, but also inspiring them to believe they can make a difference—because when we all care, even in small ways, a positive change will follow.

  3. Very true. Unless you yourself care a lot & make a change nothing will improve. My motto these days : One Step at a Time, One Day at a Time.
Make only one change till it becomes a habit. Then go on to the next one.
    There is still hope
